Our Story
Life of Riley Tours takes its name from the well-loved phrase “Life of Riley,” meaning an easy and pleasant life. The expression first gained popularity among Irish-American soldiers during World War I. One of its earliest mentions comes from a 1918 letter by Private Walter J. Kennedy, stationed at Camp Dix, New Jersey, who described the great food and camaraderie, calling it “the life of Riley.”
Later that year, another soldier, Private Samuel S. Polley, referenced the phrase in a letter from France, further cementing its association with comfort and ease. While the origin of “Riley” as a name is unclear, it’s thought to represent a generic Irishman, much like the name Paddy.
The phrase, likely rooted in Irish-American communities, became widely recognized thanks to the 1919 song “My Name is Kelly” by Howard Pease, celebrating carefree living.
